Overview

An oil seal is a sealing element used in mechanical equipment to prevent the leakage of lubricating oil, the entry of dust or impurities. Its main function is to form a seal between the rotating shaft or reciprocating shaft of the equipment and the surrounding fixed parts, thereby protecting the bearings and other important parts and extending the service life of the equipment. Oil seals are commonly used in various mechanical devices such as automobiles, construction machinery, hydraulic equipment, industrial machinery, etc.

The working principle of the oil seal is based on physical sealing. It uses the contact pressure between the seal and the shaft or hole to form a sealing barrier that prevents the flow of the medium. The lip of the oil seal will produce a certain suction force on the shaft, so that the sealing lip is close to the shaft, thereby achieving a sealing effect. This sealing effect not only prevents the leakage of oil, but also prevents external contaminants from entering the interior of the equipment. The following will introduce the classification of oil seals from the perspective of material and structure:

Oil seals are classified by material

When oil seals are classified by material, they can be divided into the following common types according to different working environments, media, temperatures and pressures:

1. Nitrile rubber (NBR) oil seals

Nitrile rubber oil seals are commonly used oil seal materials with good oil resistance, wear resistance and elasticity, and are suitable for general lubricating oils and mineral oil media. In the temperature range of -40°C to 120°C, NBR oil seals can maintain good sealing effects and are mainly used in medium temperature and pressure environments such as automobile engines, gearboxes, and hydraulic machinery.

2. Fluororubber (FKM/FPM) oil seals

Fluororubber oil seals have excellent high temperature resistance, oil resistance and chemical corrosion resistance. They are suitable for high temperature (-20°C to 200°C) and high pressure working conditions, and can resist corrosion from a variety of chemical substances. Therefore, it is often used in environments that require high temperature resistance or chemical corrosion resistance, such as automobile engines, heavy machinery, and chemical equipment.

3. Silicone rubber (VMQ) oil seal

Silicone rubber oil seal has good high and low temperature resistance (-60°C to 200°C) and strong anti-oxidation and ozone resistance, but its oil resistance is poor. Silicone rubber oil seals are usually used for static sealing occasions under more extreme temperature conditions, such as refrigeration equipment, food machinery and medical equipment.

4. Polyurethane (PU) oil seal

Polyurethane oil seals have extremely high wear resistance and mechanical strength, good adaptability to mineral oil and grease, suitable for medium temperature and pressure environments (-30°C to 80°C), and are commonly used in hydraulic cylinders, excavators, lifting equipment and other applications that require wear resistance.

5. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) oil seal

PTFE oil seal has excellent chemical corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance (-100°C to 250°C) and wear resistance, and is suitable for high temperature, high pressure, strong corrosion and high speed conditions. Therefore, it is widely used in sealing requirements under extreme conditions such as petrochemical, food and pharmaceutical equipment.

6. Ethylene propylene rubber (EPDM) oil seal

EPDM oil seal has good aging resistance, high temperature resistance (-50°C to 150°C) and ozone resistance, suitable for hot water, steam and alcohol environments, but not resistant to mineral oil and gasoline. It is mainly used in cooling systems, refrigeration equipment, hot water pipes, etc.

Oil seals of different materials are suitable for different use environments and media. The appropriate oil seal material should be selected according to the actual working conditions to ensure long-term and reliable operation of the equipment.

Oil seals are classified by structure

When oil seals are classified by structure, different types of oil seals have different structures, and each has different sealing characteristics and applicable occasions. The following are common oil seal types and their structural details:

Jinwoseals high quality single lip oil seals for sale

1. Single lip oil seal

• Structural details: The main structure of a single lip oil seal consists of a single sealing lip, which is close to the surface of the shaft, usually with a metal skeleton and spring. The metal skeleton provides support to keep the oil seal in shape, and the sealing lip rubs against the shaft to form a sealing effect. The spring can increase the pressure of the sealing lip to make it fit the shaft more closely.

• Features and functions: Suitable for low-speed and low-pressure working conditions, mainly used to prevent internal lubricating oil leakage, simple structure and low cost.

• Application occasions: Widely used in rotating parts that need to prevent oil leakage, such as engines, gearboxes, bearings, etc.

2. Double lip oil seal

• Structural details: The double lip oil seal adds an outer dust lip to the single lip oil seal, usually without a spring. The inner sealing lip is used to seal the oil, and the outer dust lip is used to block external dust and impurities. Oil seals are usually also equipped with metal skeletons to maintain their overall shape.

• Features and functions: Increased dustproof effect, suitable for dusty environments, extending the life of oil seals and the service life of equipment.

• Applications: Outdoor equipment and industrial equipment such as agricultural machinery and construction machinery can effectively prevent dust or impurities from entering the interior.

3. Skeleton oil seal

• Structural details: Skeleton oil seals have a metal skeleton embedded in the rubber seal body, which provides rigid support and maintains the shape of the oil seal. The sealing lip usually has a spring to ensure that the sealing lip fits tightly against the shaft. The combination of the outer rubber layer and the inner skeleton can withstand high temperature and high pressure.

• Features and functions: The structure is stable, resistant to high pressure, and has strong deformation resistance. It is suitable for high temperature, high speed and high vibration environments.

• Applications: Suitable for working conditions that require high-strength sealing, such as automotive engines, gearboxes, hydraulic equipment, etc.

4. Skeletonless oil seal

• Structural details: Skeletonless oil seals have no metal skeleton support, and the overall structure is soft and is usually made of rubber or elastomer materials. Frameless oil seals can more easily adapt to large shaft diameter deviations or low-precision installation environments.

• Features and functions: Good flexibility, easy installation, suitable for low-pressure and low-speed static sealing occasions, not suitable for high temperature and high pressure.

• Applications: Light equipment, motor shafts or applications that require large deformation.

5. Combined oil seal

• Structural details: Combined oil seals are composed of multiple sealing lips or sealing elements, usually including multiple rubber sealing bodies and supporting structures. The combined structure multi-layer lip and multiple sealing lip design can provide better sealing effect.

• Features and functions: Strong sealing effect, with multiple sealing properties of dustproof, waterproof and oilproof, high pressure resistance, suitable for diversified sealing needs.

• Applications: Commonly used in environments with high sealing requirements such as high-pressure hydraulic systems and heavy machinery.

6. Lip oil seal

• Structural details: The sealing lip of the lip oil seal is designed to be V-shaped, U-shaped or Y-shaped, and the sealing lip can fit the shaft surface more closely under pressure. The spring is tightened around the lip, which increases the contact pressure between the lip and the shaft.

• Features and functions: Suitable for high-pressure environments, can enhance the sealing effect, and is particularly suitable for sealing reciprocating parts.

• Applications: Widely used in reciprocating seals such as hydraulic cylinders and cylinders that need to withstand high pressure.

7. Open oil seal
