Installing PTFE piston seals requires certain steps and techniques to ensure that the performance and life of the seals are not affected. The following are common steps and precautions for installing PTFE piston seals:
Inspect the seal: Before installation, carefully inspect the PTFE seal to ensure that there is no damage, scratches or contamination.
Clean the piston: Make sure the piston surface is clean, smooth and free of any impurities, dirt or burrs, which may damage the seal or affect its sealing effect.
Ensure size matching: The size of the seal, piston and cylinder should strictly meet the technical requirements to avoid poor assembly or seal failure.
2. Lubrication
Use a suitable lubricant: Before installation, it is recommended to apply a uniform layer of a suitable lubricant on the surface of the seal and piston, usually silicone oil or mineral oil compatible with the system. Lubrication helps reduce friction generated during assembly and prevents seal damage due to dry friction.
Pay attention to the uniformity of lubrication: Lubrication should be evenly distributed, especially in the sealing lip area, but do not use excessive amounts.
3. Heat the seal
Heat the seal appropriately: Since the PTFE material itself is hard and has poor plasticity, the seal can be heated in hot water to about 50°C to soften it slightly, making it easier to install.
Do not overheat: The heating temperature should be moderate. Excessive temperature may cause the PTFE material to deform or deteriorate.
4. Use installation tools
Use special installation tools: In order to avoid damaging the seal or affecting its sealing effect, it is recommended to use special PTFE seal installation tools, such as conical installation tools or seal installation sleeves. These tools can help slide the seal evenly into the piston groove and avoid forcibly twisting the seal.
Avoid sharp tools: Do not use sharp or metal tools to directly contact the seal to prevent scratching or damaging the PTFE material.
5. Install the seal
Install step by step: Slide the seal slowly into the seal groove of the piston, ensuring that the seal is evenly distributed around the piston. During this process, the seal should not be twisted, folded or stretched.
Adjust the seal position: Use the installation tool to gently adjust the seal position so that it fits completely in the seal groove, ensuring that its sealing lip is completely aligned correctly.
Confirm that the seal is not twisted: Check whether the seal is flat and not twisted or lifted, and ensure that the sealing lip is facing the correct direction.
Manually check the piston sliding: After assembly, you can manually slide the piston to ensure that it slides smoothly, with moderate resistance, and there is no obvious sticking or friction.
7. Final inspection
After installation, carefully check the entire system to ensure that the seal has not been damaged and all parts are firmly installed and in the correct position.
Additional tips:
Avoid overstretching: Although PTFE material is wear-resistant, it has poor stretch resistance. Avoid overstretching the seal during installation.
Prevent contamination: During installation, avoid foreign particles such as dust and dirt from entering between the seal and the piston, which may cause wear and leakage.
